Birthday Update

Well, by now most of you know that Todd is back in the hospital. He hadn't been progressing as smoothly as we had hoped the week he was home and it culminated in a physical breakdown Tuesday night. I brought Todd into the emergency room as he was showing a host of distress signs after being sick earlier that day (sorry, Carolyn!).

We had an appointment on Tuesday with Dr. Mann in Seattle, but I wasn't confident Todd could make the trip and so we spoke with Dr. Mann over the phone earlier in the day. Dr. Mann had suggested a list of things we could look into as Todd wasn't recovering as quickly as any of us had hoped. When Todd took a nosedive that evening, the list ended up being great as I gave the list of tests to run to the emergency room doc. We quickly learned that he had two masses of fluid in his abdomen which could be caused by a number of things.

Wednesday morning, Todd had a drain/tube placed in his back, located about the bottom of his ribs. Soon, very stinky fluid started draining from his body. Things haven't changed much since Wednesday morning. We did find out through a variety of tests that the fluid wasn't/isn't coming from anywhere along his digestive track. "Mouth to South" - as I like to call it - is all good.

They started him back on clear liquids on Wednesday and Thursday and started him on full liquids today. Not the best birthday present, but a decent one nonetheless.

I guess we had to spread the hospital love. Our friends in Seattle had the chance to see us in that lovely hospital state, so we just wanted to be sure our friends in Portland had the same chance.

Thanks to all our friends in both locations that took time out of their day to visit Todd at the hospital!
